I know what you’re thinking.
It’s too hard. There’s too many layers, too much time has gone by, they’ve settled into their own rhythm and frankly, so have I. Why do it differently, what will it change? Nothing’s changed so far anyway.
I keep bumping up against this wall and frankly, we all need to take stock of reality. It’s time to deal with what is in front of me, not some idealistic version of things.
And you’re right. There are many layers, it makes it hard to get your point across to them, when they’ve heard you a thousand times already and can complete your sentence anyway. Are they even really listening?
You can’t change what others do, say, think or feel. And granted, in all the things you’ve done, nothing much has changed. But here’s the thing.
You’ve only got the one life. The one career. The one personal brand. It’s yours, even if at times, it does not feel so. You don’t feel it because you don’t own it and you don’t own it because you are scared.
Of course, I am scared. Nothing’s worked so far. I keep failing. He gets in the way, he’s not supporting me in the way I envisaged. My manager doesn’t allow me the latitude I know I deserve. What choices do I have?
Yes, it’s scary. A life well-lived can frequently feel like a life on the brink.
But it’s not always on the brink of disaster. It can be on the brink of greatness. But it requires courage and choice. There will always be problems and challenges. There will always be a ton of reasons why not to do something and things that just get in the way.
But the questions to ask yourself are firstly, what do you want? Secondly, what will I do to get there? It’s very important that you remember, at all times, your dreams must be unfettered. You do not set boundaries and parameters to what should be vision and hope combined.
If you shrink away from exploring what is before you and more importantly, exploring what you can become, what you can do and how you can unfold, you don’t give yourself a chance to be. You are merely a shell, a question mark, possibility waiting to blossom.
So, what do you want? What will you do to get there?
