Why is this respectful of other people’s time?
Simply because, whether they admit it or not, everyone is time poor these days. It’s one of the greatest ironies today that all the wonderful conveniences and inventions we’ve created have only resulted in us spinning around the wheel even faster than before. And if we are time poor, we have to be fairly selective about what we decide we will do with our time.
It’s not a reflection of who you are or what you’re about – it has to do with our values and our choices.
If you identify the value you bring up front, it makes it easier and quicker for people to make the decisions you too, need them to make, about you. You simply cannot expect that people will do things for free or that their time is not precious to them.
In any case, identifying the value brought crystalises things for the people you approach while clarifying, for yourself, your ultimate intent.
